Area Covered by Medicare Competitive Bidding

What area does the Medicare Bidding Program cover?
Currently the program is limited to Medicare beneficiaries who reside in Riverside and San Bernardino Counties, along with nine areas of other states.

The patients home ZIP code is used to determine if they are included in the program. Medicare uses the ZIP code on file with the Social Security Administration. Generally, you can ask the patient for the ZIP code of where they receive their SSA or Medicare statements.


If a patient moves and does not report the change to the SSA they will remain in the program until they do so.

Patients who reside outside of the program area (referred to as the CBA) are not impacted by the current round of bidding contracts.

The program will be expanded with a new round of bidding that is to begin in 2011 with an implementation date of 2013. This expansion of the program will include 91 additional areas of the country. These areas are selected based on their population. The expansion will bring this program to virtually all populated areas of the country.

At Diamond our current service area includes the entire area covered by the program.
