One in three adults 65 and older falls each year. Water and awkward positions can make the bathroom the most dangerous place in your home. Bathroom safety equipment is a must for all seniors living independently. Commodes A bedside commode is a portable toilet. They are used for patients whose illness or recovery prevents them from getting to their bathroom. They have toilet seat on top, with a removable pail. Most models can function as a toilet safety frame once the pail is removed. This is useful as the person recovers. Shower chair: Shower chairs are designed to allow the user to sit while bathing. Some models fit entirely inside the shower while others are designed to assist in transferring the patient to a wheelchair. Shower chairs are recommended for all oxygen patients as the exertion of showering can cause de-saturation and falls. Raised toilet seats: These devices mount directly to the toilet and provide a raised seat with safety handles. They are used for anyone who has difficulty rising from a sitting position. Nearly all patients recovering from hip or knee surgery require this device. Grab bars: These safety devices come in temporary and permanent models. They are mounted to walls, tub enclosures, and near toilets. They provide a stable access point for anyone who requires extra stability for bathroom functions. |
