Low Air-loss Mattress Low air-loss mattresses work by distributing the patients weight throughout the entire surface area that they touch. It greatly reduces pressure from healing wounds, and prevents new wounds from forming. Moisture causes tissue breakdown. The air mattress is covered with a quilt like layer that allows air to flow through it. With a constant flow of air supplied by the pump, any moisture present is eliminated (sweat). Despite the constant airflow, incontinent patients must be promptly changed. Additionally, the mattress covers are designed to reduce friction. This aids in preventing skin from folding over itself which can cause new wounds. It also prevents friction against wound closures. Alternating Pressure Mattresses Both types of mattresses are coved by insurance when medically necessary. These devices are designed for patients who have serious pressure or surgical wounds (decubitus ulcers stage II –IV). They are used in conjunction with a wound care plan.
