Nebulizers

Nebulizers
A nebulizer is a device the breaks up liquid medication into a fine mist. This mist is inhaled directly into the lungs. A nebulizer is typically prescribed for patients with asthma, emphysema, COPD and other respiratory problems. Common drugs used with a nebulizer are: Albuterol, Ipratropium Bromide, Perforamist, Xopenex, and Brovana.

The nebulizer machine is an air compressor. The compressor pumps air through a circuit where the medication is held. This circuit is referred to as: the nebulizer cup, a neb circuit, and a hand held nebulizer – all meaning the same thing. The actual “nebuliz-ing” of the medication is done inside the nebulizer cup.

Inside the nebulizer cup is usually clear or opaque. There is a cone shaped (sometimes mushroom shaped) colored piece of plastic inside. Without this piece the nebulizer will not work. The piece is removable, and sometimes falls out when cleaning.

You should replace the hand held portion of your nebulizer monthly or sooner if you have been ill. Replacement supplies are available from Diamond.

To clean your nebulizer circuit, disassemble it, and run it under water. Place it on a clean paper towel to dry.  DO NOT put it in your dishwasher unless specifically told to.

Ultrasonic (Small) Nebulizers
Ultrasonic nebulizers use a sound wave, or vibration, to nebulizer medications. They are virtually silent, run on batteries, and are pocket sized. The most notable model is the Microair by Omron. It is perfect for people who do not want to bring their large nebulizer with them. Students love it as well.
