 A portable oxygen concentrator, also called a portable concentrator is a small device used to provide oxygen therapy. Today’s portable concentrators are roughly the size of a toaster, can run on re-chargeable batteries, and be used in cars and planes. With a portable oxygen concentrator compressed cylinders are no longer needed. The device functions the same way a home oxygen concentrator does – but at a fraction of the size. On a typical prescribed setting (2lpm) they will last 3-4 hours per charge. However, the concentrator can be plugged in nearly anywhere (car, boat, plane, house, cruise ship, train). These devices are very popular for active patients, especially those who travel. Recently the FAA has approved them for use on all major airlines.
