CPAP or Continuous Positive Airway Pressure is a device that keeps your airway open while you sleep. You wear a mask to bed that attaches to your CPAP with a hose. The CPAP blows air through the mask at a pre-set pressure (determined during your sleep study). CPAP users are generally apprehensive at first but elated once they experience quality sleep. Your physician will likely order a heater and humidifier with your CPAP. This combination makes CPAP use very comfortable. The air is passed over heated water where it can pick up moisture before you inhale. This prevents drying to the sinuses and mouth. Many mask options are available for CPAP use. They come in different sizes and materials. Some have gels that form fit to your face. At Diamond a respiratory therapist will assist you in mask selection and fitting.
