Sleep Studies

To diagnose a sleep disorder such as sleep apnea your physician will order a sleep study. This study can be conducted at a lab or in your home.

Sleep Lab Testing
If conducted at a lab you will spend the night there. They will connect you to several monitors and you’ll sleep in a bedroom. A technician will monitor your sleep patterns and any apnea episodes that occur from a control room. If the technician suspects apnea they will wake you mid way through the study and place a special CPAP on you.

This CPAP will automatically find the pressure required to prevent the apnea episodes from occurring. Once complete a report will be sent to your physician.

Home Testing
Most sleep studies can now be done in the home. You will receive a monitor that you either wear around your chest or on your forehead. This monitor records the required information while you sleep. The monitor is returned for to the lab for processing and a report is sent to your physician.

If the physician finds that you have sleep apnea you will receive an auto CPAP. This type of CPAP constantly adjusts to your bodies requirements.

Home sleep studies work for most people. However, home tests do not work on patients who have central sleep apnea. In that event you will be referred to a traditional sleep lab.
