Fitting To properly fit a manual wheelchair you must consider several body measurements including hip width, height, and weight. We’ll also need an understanding of the mobility limitation and where the chair will be used. With this information we’ll select the chair that’s right for you. Standard Wheelchairs Standard wheelchairs come in all sizes. They are typically made of steel and weigh in excess of 32 pounds. These chairs can be folded for storage or transportation. Light Weight Wheelchairs Light weight wheelchairs are made of aluminum and are generally less than 32 pounds. They are the most commonly used chairs for seniors who are propelling themselves. Light weight wheelchairs come in an assortment of sizes and can be modified as needed. Transport Chairs A transport chair resembles a wheelchair. However, it has small (8”) wheels. It is not designed for the patient to self-propel. A transport chair is generally used for short trips. They can be stored in a vehicle easily unfolded for use. Manual wheelchairs can create several pressure points on the buttocks and back. To prevent pressure sores back and seat cushions are strongly recommended. These cushions Velcro in place for easy removal. Pressure reducing cushions are recommended for both the seat and back of all wheelchairs. |
