Although NPWT is relatively safe to use and special instructions are provided by your phycisian, there are instances when caution is to be observed.  If you notice any of the following, notify your doctor or nurse right away or call 911.


1.Excessive bleeding - If you are using a wound vacuum  after heart surgery, general surgery on blood vessels, or while on blood thinners, you may have a higher risk of bleeding. If you see a sudden increase or a large amount of blood from your wound or in the tubing or canister do the following:

• Turn OFF the therapy unit right away
• Put pressure over the area
• Do not remove your dressing
• Seek medical attention
        
2. Signs of Wound Infection - Your dressing should be changed more often if your wound is infected. If you have any of the following symptoms call your doctor or nurse right away.

• Fever
• Wound is sore, red or swollen
• Skin itches or you have a rash
• Area in or around the wound feels very warm
• Pus or oder coming from the wound

3. Allergic Reactions - NPWT dressings, drape and canisters are germ and latex free. Use these once and throw them away.If you notice any of the following call your doctor or nurse right away.

• Redness
• Swelling
• Rash or hives

4. The machine is off – The machine should always be on.  If you noticed that the machine may have been turned off unintentionally for longer than two hours call your doctor or nurse right away.
